Optimize Your Personal Brand Using ChatGPT
As I continue the strategy of optimizing my personal branding to improve the odds of landing a job as a product manager in marketing technology, I’ve found it increasingly difficult to track all the places where my name — and my work — are mentioned online.
While researching ChatGPT’s latest announcement about supporting product searches, I had a wild thought: Could this also support searching for people?
I went down a rabbit-hole.
So I asked ChatGPT, and although the answer is “no,” it isn’t a “forever no.” Let me explain.
GPT indicated that product search capabilities are laying the groundwork for people search. So, it is just a matter of time and if you haven’t worked on your branding, it is best to start now.
“You’re absolutely not wasting time optimizing your portfolio, case studies, or public bio for GPT visibility,” responded ChatGPT. “In fact, you’re getting ahead of a shift that’s already happening informally — and will likely become official later. Think of it like SEO for humans in an AI-first world.”
Why is this important, especially if you’re in the job market looking for your next gig? Well, for starters, employers, talent acquisition specialists, and recruiters are likely searching for you online — even as you read this post. Assuming that is true, you can bet they’re already doing it on ChatGPT.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets incorporated into the traditional background check process.
Use ChatGPT to optimize your branding
If you have a digital footprint and are concerned about your digital privacy, know that your information is exposed to ChatGPT as much as it is exposed to search engines. To test this, just look yourself up on ChatGPT right now and come back to this post to continue reading. Use the following prompt: Find all information about [your name and last name] [title] [city] or [school attended]. The more details the better.
If ChatGPT generated a “dossier” about your public information, welcome, you have a digital footprint. Whether it is all good stuff (I hope) or the not so good, your information is out there and it might be hurting your personal branding.
If you found an old profile picture from your days on MySpace, Friendster or Google+, old tweets that you’re not too proud of, or outdated articles from LinkedIn, Medium, or Substack, then use this time to work with ChatGPT to clean-up your digital footprint. Optimize those pages with the goal of finding job opportunities or even sell your products.
Ask GPT to provide you with URLs of the pages that contain your information. Create an inventory of content about you — whether published by you or others.
If you found content on search engines that you want it removed, try requesting its removal using tools such as Google’s My Activity.
Do some pruning and update those pages with recent information about you and include strong calls to action. Promote that you’re looking for opportunities.
Find a common theme and optimize your branding. Make it all work in a cohesive manner to reach a common goal. Do some future-proofing of your personal brand so that when the time comes, your information on ChatGPT is solid!
Remember, LinkedIn is but one of many channels that can open doors to opportunities. If you’re not posting content here on Medium or on LinkedIn, and want to do it, reach out. I’d be happy to share some of the strategies that have worked for me.
